To the Lauberhorn Races with APS
Not only the spectators but also the functionaries and athletes and 1,500 tonnes of material needed for the races are largely carried up to Wengen, the Kleine Scheidegg pass or the Wengernalp alpine meadow on the narrow-gauge cog railway Wengernalpbahn (WAB). Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen can be reached from Interlaken via a different narrow-gauge railway, the Berner-Oberland-Bahn (BOB). Both the Berner-Oberland-Bahn and the Wengernalpbahn are equipped with products made by APS. The devices supply the batteries from 1500VDC and the 3x400V on-board supply systems with power or generate the separate excitation required for electric braking systems of the motors of older vehicles. Events such as the Lauberhorn Races place especially high demands on the reliability of the devices. Since 2017, the Berner-Oberland-Bahn features the latest generation of articulated control car by Stadler Rail – equipped with APS technology. The trains, each made up of three sections, have an auxiliary power converter with 45kVA power on the 3x400V side and two 6kW chargers in each car. The machines are connected to the Selectron control and monitoring systems via CANopen and feature the latest in fully browser-based diagnostic interfaces.
